Turkey Lurkey Day at CLC

Yay for Thanksgiving lunch many times over! Oscar’s school had their Thanksgiving lunch with the parents today. The school cooks turkey, mashed potatoes, gray, dressing, rolls and the parents bring the sides and dessert. Nothing like sitting around tables, with your child, celebrating Thanksgiving with his friends and teachers. Want to feel like a giant? Sit around a table built for 3-5 year olds with children; it was like I ate that mushroom in Alice in Wonderland, also I was almost 6’ tall in my boots today sitting in a chair 12” above the floor. Oscar’s friends are all polite, incredibly cute children; I am always amazed how Emily and her assistant teachers have so many preschoolers not only controlled, but saying “please”, “thank you”, and “may I be excused”. As soon as these same children get strapped into the car to go home, I bet the same thing happens, they all turn into demanding, crazy, but still lovable children. I know ours does. I think parenting is sometimes all about dealing with the crazy so teachers, grandparents, friends, and strangers get the version they think is so sweet and adorable. Yeah, just try being in the car when all you want to do is listen to is one of “your songs”, but instead hear, “I want to listen to Teenage Mutange Ninja Turtles again!!”.

They made Turkey Hats for Thanksgiving.

O-S-C-A-R

Living in an earthquake prone area means that Oscar's bed wall has never been decorated. Not that anything would come off the wall and fall on him, but I sleep much better at night knowing that is one less thing I have to worry about while raising a little boy. I have been thinking for about a year what I could place on that wall that would be lovely, while also being earthquake safe. Then last week I finally choose an art display and yarn wrapped letters. They are both extremely light weight and pose no threat should Yellowstone blow up at 2:00 in the morning. Also, since Oscar goes every week to the Center of the Arts for an art lesson, we have some masterpieces that are in need of displaying. The yarn letters provide some color and wonderful texture to the wall as well. Chris and I worked on them last Wednesday night and we loved the way they turned out. We are very happy with the installation and love that Oscar's room no longer has a lone, blank wall.

Lifesaver, Well Maybe Eye Shadow- Saver

There are some things in this world that are truly better than their less expensive counterparts, eye shadow is one of them. My favorites are NARS and M.A.C. eye shadows, they have richer pigments, better colors, and they last all work day. They also cost about four times more than drugstore brands, which is why when I drop one or it cracks, my morning is ruined. I refuse to throw them away so my makeup case has little jars of the loose powder that once was pressed powder. Don't ask me why, but pressed eye shadow powder works ten times better than loose powder, so it is not the same. A few months ago there was an article on The Beauty Department blog about how to fix them, but I was skeptical that it would even work, so I did not try it. I did not want to take the chance, have it not work, and completely ruin my shadow.  Then yesterday, as I stared at my "Nocturnelle" M.A.C. eye shadow that was all sad and broken, I decided to just go for it since it was not doing me much good as a loose powder. Half way through the process, I thought I had completely ruined my shadow just as I feared, however this was the solution I needed to save my eye shadow. I repeated the  process with my other two broken eyes shadows, and I am so happy with the results. I used one this morning and it was as if it had never broken. So if you have any broken shadows, blushes, etc sitting in your make up case, drawer, purse, whatever; you can now fix them.

  1. WRAP IT UP: Completely cover the compact with the plastic wrap and make sure it adheres tightly to contain everything.
  2. MASH IT UP: With your spatula, crush up the entire pan of shadow, not just the broken pieces. You essentially are turning the pressed powder back into loose powder.
  3. ADD ALCOHOL: Remove the wrap and add at least 10 droppers full of 70 % alcohol. You can add a few droppers full at a time to see how much you need. I used a dozen.
  4. SMOOTH IT OVER: Now you’ll feel the powder has become sponge-like and very pliable, giving you the perfect opportunity to even it out smoothly with your spatula.
  5. PERFECT THE EDGES: Use your eyeliner brush to smooth it out even further. Give it a few hours to completely dry and it’s like it never happened! To make it extra pretty, clean up the perimeter with a Q-tip.
* jauberry note- I used With Hazel instead of 70% Alcohol and it worked perfectly.

Trick or Treat

Have I mentioned how much I love our neighborhood? Not only is it great to have children Oscar's age living close by, but our neighbors are some of the most wonderful people. We had so much fun trick or treating with the fellow neighborhood families; watching the children running from house to house. Even my dear husband got into the spirit by wearing my "Bad Dye Job Black Widow" wig. Oscar got so much candy, but he was on the hunt for Kit Kats at every house. I thought it was because he must like the way they taste, but no, as he told us later, he just loves the color red. Interesting.
