When it is rainy, damp, grey, and basically blah in Jackson, there is one activity you can do...... go morel mushroom hunting! Morels are delicious, odd looking mushrooms that grow here in the early spring for two weeks. (Mushroom hunting is not something one should do without knowing exactly what you are looking for and plenty of research.) Chris and I have yet to find any in the years before because people who know where they grow guard that secret and will not tell even the best of friends. People are selfish, but finally some unselfish, nice person told us where to go, so Saturday we left and ventured to find these delicious, elusive mushrooms. The Gothams came along with us and for the next two-three hours we walked around and stared at the ground looking for morels. In the end we found about 16-19 mushrooms, which is about a pound. We were excited, especially considering they are $20 a pound in the store. That night we feasted on steak, morels, corn souffle (best thing ever), and butter cake with cream cheese frosting. Not a bad day for one so rainy and blah.
